沖縄から、東アジア・オセアニア島嶼圏における持続的発展の実現に向けた提言を発信しようという意欲的な研究プロジェクトです。「琉球・沖縄比較研究：「環境・文化・社会融合研究」「超領域研究」「研究情報基盤」という四つのイニシアティブを設定し、歴史・文化・政治・経済・環境など多角的な視点から島嶼圏社会を捉え、国内外の機関や研究者とともに連携しながら本プロジェクトを推進しています。
